Junk, Cranes and a Glitch

Zepp Stairs..............

We hadn't made any stairs or any kind of entry platform/ramp for the zepplin asuming we could use the door as that, which obviously ddnt happen :P............. so Chris asked me to quickly model one for the scene. I improvised a little so that I didn't waste alot of time on is and used the stairs I made for Tasha's environment she was moddelling which I never finished (the actual steps weren't done). I didn't keep the stairs how they were though as it would look out of place, and instead duped, mirrored, altered and then combined them all together to form the final thing.............

Render Problems and Lighting Tests....................

With only about two more weeks left before initial film hand in, we have started hitting major problems with rendering. Though Dan in our group had already tested it out prior and it seemed to work fine, the Render Farm of the college which we were relying on just flat out does not want to render our work. Although we are not 100% satisfied with our animations in the 1st scene, we want to start rendering them now so that we can get the film in on time (we can polish it all up for the dgree show)......... BUT.......... every time we try to render using the Render Farm we get errors or renders wich have not come out right.

Dan and louis, even though overly frustrated, seem to be managing to resolve each problem that occurs........BUT (again).............. a new problem problem arrises each time one is resolved. This is really really bad not just because we are running out of time to render full quality shots, but also for animating. Each time something happens louis is out of commision with animating, and then occasionally the fix would need to be applied to the scenes im working on or my animations would need to be imported in a "now fixed" scene............ meaning I could be sitting around for pottentially hours waiting for scenes to be fixed (which can't exactly be helped).............

Everyone in the group is working extremely hard at this point, but right now its looking as if Chris and whoever else that can help will need to take on a big part of the 3rd scene as Im running out of time and I still havn't been told EXACTLY what dialogue is to be in the 3rd scene for me to animate around.

Because of the lack of time we have to animate now that both character rigs and all environments are ready (though they were ready enough to animate on weeks ago :P) for JUNK FOOD, the group has come up with a strategy to get things done. The strategy is ultimately a production workflow, Louis is to blockout the keyposes of shots that need to be done in the 1st scene while others who are willing to animate help do the same for the 3rd scene while i start working on it, then I will go over all the blockout animations and clean them up and sort out timing issues etc............

The purposes of us deciding on this is firstly to speed things up, we can at least have the film blocked out and everyone can pottentially be able to pitch in even if they are not too comfortable with animating. The second reason is the issue of style changes in animation. We'v been going over how we are to maintain a similar animation style throughout the film, it was very obvious more than one person (being me) would have to animate as its still quite a big film to take on in such a short time. By doing this method of animating, we can get the film done easier and the group reckons we can maintain a similar look to the animations as my style will be through the final passes...... wich makes sense to be honest.

Soooo yeah, we have a TON of animating to do and only like a month to get it done from this point on............ whoah!!

A random problem I noticed in the geometry of the valley. I must have forgotten to turn on 'Keep Faces Together' when extruding, I have all this extra geometry I have to clean up now. This has happened a few times during my moddelling.... I really gota stop doin that :P...........

I decided some floodlights could be cool to add in the scene, especially as a source of light in the animation..........

The light bulb looking like they are lit is just from a simple white Lambert texture with the glow effect turned on

Iv also added sockets with fitting plugs (for cables) aswell on the backs, but tbh they wont ever be seen in the animation so that was abit pointless really :P

Screenshots and breakdown of the first stages of the environment Im moddelling for the 3rd scene of JUNK FOOD..................

I kept the runway that Chris had moddelled prior (so bare in mind the runway bit itself isn't mine), I then started off with a simple poly cylinder, upped the subdivisions to allow me to add symetrical detailing, and then used the 'Add Devisions' tool to add even more lines in specific places of geometry so that i can add the lowered crease like parts of the platform...... all the extra geometry was removed later :P.......... The two rings are poly toruses, and the outher platform part you see further below started off as a flattened and accordinly expanded poly pipe............

The bar at the top of the stair is there as a guide to show the angle and hight of the stairs according to the blockout I did of scene 3.......... this is an important thing to pay attention to becasue it will help determine how the camera will first see the zepp..............

Blow you can see I had to lower the top of the stairs because the steps were WAAAY too big and steep in relateion to the scale of our characters............

(I also added the oval shaped inner extension to the runway as you can see above)

The stairs from here on became an issue because they had to maintain the right angles so the camera can not see the zepplin wen the characters approach the top of the stairs, whilst also having a realistic scale to the characters...............

Initially the stairs were squashed and stretched (ironic this model being for an animation)

Then I added more steps and played around with the scale of the 'object'...........

Some stuff I started moddelling for Natasha's environment (Scene 1) but didn't carry on with as time went on and they were not needed so much......................

This staircase was quite tricky to make, its a part of Tasha's concept design for scene 1..... we thought it might be cool if we had the graveyard within a building ruin, like with just the walls and some of its structure in tack to surround the area. In Tasha's design she had this strangly shaped staircase where it starts off straight but then carries on in a curve, with the edges further curling outwards.............

I created this blockout environment for scene 3, considering the angles and distances of the landscape in proportion to the characters and zepplin in order establish some of our key camera shots, and thus make it easier having an accurate guide to model the proper final environment from................

New Story Breakdown............

Seeing as we have changed the story for 'Junk Food' I thought it might be a good idea to give a detailed outline of what happens now.................

Ok, so like I had established in a previous post, we managed to keep the general outcome of the story the same and most of the plot development is still very similar, it's just waaaay more simplified and less of an 'epic'..................

There are essentially 3 scenes that make up the story..............

Scene 1 - This scene establishes the characters, their purposes and how they meet. The story starts with a radio transmission (1950s style broadcast) which will explain how humans left the planet in large ships to explore the stars, we will then see a starry sky fade in with our main character Sophie holding up a toy zepplin/ship to the sky while in deep thought. [For the sake of being brief Im gona leave out explaining every shot and just run through the story] Sophie then turns to a grave stone she is sitting next to and ask her father if she will ever got off the planet. This will all establish that Sophie is a girl stuck on the planet (not sure if we want it to be Earth or not yet) with the ultimate goal of getting off/'escaping' the way humans did so in the past, and also identify the grave she is sitting next to is her father's.

After she asks the question another radio transmission cuts and to say somthing like "never in a million years...", something on those lines. Sophie then shows her firey character and throws the toy away in anger, the toy zepp in a way also showing her in anger giving up on 'escape'. The toy will then hit and wake up an inactive Junk Robot (these robots being partially explained in the initial radio transmission at the beggining). Through a small sequence of interactions (maybe also Sophie pulling a jammed object out of the Robot which is preventing him from being operational, thus helping/saving him first) the Robot notices the toy zepplin in Sophie's hand points in the direction of a dark valley and walks off as if to say "follow me". Hesitant at at first, Sophie looks back at her fathers grave and decides to follow the Robot. [FADE]........... Sophie looking back will also suggest she is affraid to part with her father or maybe seeking some guidence of what to do.

Scene 2 - This scene's purpose is to show a journey and passing of time between the graveyard and their final destination. Not much will happen in this scene.......... maybe a few interactions like the Robot picking up Sophie if she falls over or give her a supporting push when she gets tired. It will be short shots of them travelling through the valley, which the sky gradually becoming close to sun rise, but not quite.......... Fade in at the beggining and a fade out at the end to show passing of time.

Scene 3 - After the fade in we will see our characters exiting the valley and approach what looks like the edge of a crator or a large pit. When they stop we will have a close up of Sophie's face as she is looking down at the floor from being tired and now unhopefull...... when she looks up to see why they have come to a stop she will burst out in joy. The camera will then sweep round them zooming out and tracking from behind and above them to show what has excited Sophie so much, and there the audience will see a huge Zepplin/Ship on a launch platform in the crator with the warm morning sunrise gleaming behind it. She looks at the Robot and storms down the steps leading to the platform, the Robot follows.

When the group was thinking of how everything will start operating on the platform, I had a suggestion that maybe once the Robot crosses a certain line or barrier the platform will engage and power up, suggesting that it was these Junk Robots' purpose to launch these huge space Zepps/Ships........ 'our' Robot being the key to Sophie's 'escape'.................

We also thought maybe we could show lots of inactive/dead Robots around and on the launch platform, making it sort of a graveyard for these Junk Bots, but then decided it would make the animation too 'dark'........... However our tutor Dan Dalli gave us the go ahead for it and suggested that we could just show forms that looked like brocken down Junk Bots which the audience could identify but Sophie couldn't.... especially with her over joyed state.

When Sophie enters the Zepp/Ship out of excitement the Robot carries on with his bussiness calmly, knowing what is about to happen. He makes the door close on Sophie upon entry, makes his way to a panel on the Zepp/Ship that seems like a power grid or plug in socket for something...... while Sophie is pressed up against the window wanting to know wats going on. The Robot will then open his chest and pull out his energy source (his heart in a way) and place it into the panel on the Zepp/Ship. The audience will now fully know that the Robot is the key and power source to making the craft launch off, and that he must sacrifice staying behind in order to help Sophie be free.

A count down will start, maybe represented with sequencial lights on the plaform, notifying Sophie that the craft is about to take off...... without her new friend in it. She cries and pleads for the Robot to get in the Zepp/Ship, but the Robot knows it must stay behind. When the Zepp/Ship takes off we will see the robot burning (but not damaged), then, the cable connecting from his chest to his heart now in the Zepp/Ship will tear out............ putting an end to the Robot's life.

The animation will finish off with a medium close up of Sophie crying from outside the Zepplin/Ship's window as its blasting off, then cut to a final low shot from the ground where we can see the Zepplin/Ship firing off in the distant sky and the radio close up in the corner of the shot............ a radio transmission kicks in with a braodcast that seems like a message to Sophie to now be free and happy............ making the story come round in full circle to end how it started (with a radio transmission) and suggest that maybe her father was somehow in the radio or controlling the radio making the events of the story occur for his daughter to be free...............

Work for Anja Before the Easter Holidays.........

Before we broke up for Easter holidays when we (the JUNK FOOD crew) had to put all our focus on the film I had managed to get the Bamboo bridge scene done and dusted for Anja (not textured though). I sorted out all the shape issues with the bamboo and reduced the poly count (as Anja wanted) in the scene to more than half by deleting lines by hand. After duplicating everything and re-arranging, I did a few test renders which you can see below...............

Before JUNK FOOD had to be re-written and we started the project over, I had managed to create a few things (vaguely), so Iv jus posted them up here even though I highly dount any of it will probably be used after this point............

I have to say moddelling these organic-esc environmental structures were fun. Each object was moddelled from a basic cube using a variation of tools and techniques

Situation Update...........

I know I know, I havn't posted any updates for MONTHS!!!! lol....... Dissertation work got in the way of everything else the last few weeks before deadline, everything went hecktic with the production of my main chosen film (Junk Food) and alot has happened in regards to how it stands. Basically the film was going nowhere fast!!..... and at the end of our second term our tutors told us that the story was just not going to work due to the length and scale of events (which was probably why we were not making hardly any progress) and gave us a week to completely re-write the story.

We basically managed to maintain the outcomes of the story but highly reduced and refined the events, giving things alot more meaning and connection. I think the work I did for my dissertation really developed my mind as a film maker, which in turn was extremely useful when we were re-creating the story.

We did manage to pull out a story and enough work in that one week for the film to still be in production, but we were kinda back to quare one....... we litterally were to restart our project with just over a term to do it. So we came into uni nearly every day of our Easter brake to work.

Though we are still tight for time, the production for Junk Food is going ok and it looks like we WILL finish this film......... I have been taking screen shots of my work progress since my last update, so I will post them all up after this :D...............

Although I highly doubt I will ever use this method for any of the film projects Im working on, I found this really useful tutorial on normal mapping in Maya.... something I had no idea how to do. Thought it was really interesting so Im embeding it on this post for anyone who wants to take a look................

Bamboo Modifications........

Anja respectfully wanted a few things to be changed in the scene I had so far. She asked for the leaves to be completely flat, with a slight curling up on some leaves. The rings on the bamboos can't just stick out they need to be overlaping the section below it. And the bamboo bridge needed abit of varying on the edges of the rolls. None too hard, but jus time consuming.

Iv already hit a problem though. Making the rings on the bamboos give a strange effect as shown below.

Now there is a simple solution which Iv tried and works, and that is to harden certain edges on the model. Its just that it completely gets rid of that nice fading tone to the sections of the bamboo.

Junk Start........

First signs of life for the Junk Food environment. With the nature of the project, we can't really model scenes vaguely, they all have to be specific to the shots of the animation. So me and Tash (who are assigned to model the environment) have been abit confused as to what we need to model for the first part of the term as the group hadn't produced final final storyboards (naughty us), though honestly speaking we should have come up with finished designs ourselves too.

But anyhooo........ now we have gotten a jump start with some awesome digital concept/storyboard/thumbnails from our director Chris, and Iv chosen to start on the valley to the junkyard.

Although its not too relative I thought Id jus post this screenshot. Maybe others might try it out.

Having to constantly go back and forth through windows to check out Chris's design when moddelling was starting to agitate me, so I thought 'hey, why not put the design into maya like reference board or sumin'....... So I did :P...... I don't have a great deal of use for the perspective view in the corner when modelling in orthographic views, so I mapped the design as a texture onto a plane and focused the view in perspective onto it. Thus, making one of my views my refference, saving me switching through windows...............

One thing Im having to do for the moddelling of this scene, and I feel Ill be making use of this alot for this project, is to soften or harden edges, luckily something Iv only recently picked up from Anja.

Although the curving of the arch was how I wanted it, it still rigit due to the light reflecting off the geometry.

So I simply selected the edges that were giving the unwanted effect, then in the polygon menu did Normals>Soften Edge.

And the end result.

Iv made some bamboo (not for the brisge itself) for these scene. I extruded poly cylinders to a curve for this, and made the necesarry clean ups. Below is a test of how the scene looks so far with the mountains and 'water' temporarily in perspective.........

I had to add 'edges rings' to the bamboo and shape em' up to give the models a proper bamboo look.

The bridge is completed too, but you can't see it from the angle as the models are dead on and made from flat surfaces.

The first set of work Iv done for the term is starting moddeling my assigned scene for Anja's film 1000 Cranes for Peace. She has assigned me with the bamboo bridge run scene, which wasn't in her original animatic. She wants everything to look like papaer (naturally) and everything to have a certain look to it, e.g. the bamboo which the bridge is made out of should look like rolled paper, the mountains to look like cutouts, etc.

So the first thing I did was to find a way around making th bamboo look like it was rolled paper. I decided to litterally draw out the swirl of the 'rolled paper' using the 'Pencil Curve Tool', duplicating it, and then lofting the two identical curves. I didn't know how tightly rolled Anja wanted them to look so I made a few examples for her.....

Anja prefered the three on the right, but asked for them to be tighter rolled in the center and gradually loosen up. This was so that they would look more natural, like they were rolled by hands.

I left this part for later, because it was going to take a while. Also I don't think Im going to convert the final models into polygons because they will be static objects and the poly count is gona be crazy due to the nature of the shape and the sheer amount of duplicates that will be made. Plus, texture applied will wrap itself around without trouble.

Next up were the mountains. Simple enough, jus used the create polygon tool for these.

The leaves were abit of a hassle. Used create poly again to get the shapes, then had to cut faces one by one in order to create seems, etc. etc.

Ok sooo this is abit of a late first post for the term, been a little unorganised this term.... so this is gona be more of a foreword for the rest of the work update posts.

Wasn't hugely productive over the christmas break in terms of moddeling and stuff for the film projects, but progress has been made through the last few weeks...... dissertation taking over life.......... less and less sleep every night............ stress of certain people building up............ not feeling 100% healthy............. loosing the will to live. But other than that everything is good.

Also, jus thought Id post these two renders from a lighting test I did during the Christmas break, I was testing out different lighting techniques and fiddling with options so that I could lean abit more on this area.

I jus put together a bunch of primitive objects (some with colour for photon testing purposes) to create a simple scene and jus fiddled away. The 'Final Gather' option is my new fave tool :P......

End of Term Note...............

Ok so its the end of the first term now, one which has been a little unorganised and stressfull. The three films I have chosen to work on, with Junk Food being my main one, have all moved along slowly in this term of pre-production. With Junk Food it took us quite a while to come up with a finished script from ground up, respectfully with Chris's hard work on the matter. So as a group it was abit hectic for us to generate the needed work load starting close to all the presentations and essay work slowly kicking in. But I think we did okish........ aside from the unfinished animatic that is :P...........

Anja's film '1000 Cranes for Peace' came along quite well though. Again things got a little unorganised with occasional comunication problems within the group, but I think the needed work for the term was achieved. Only thing though was that Anja had to take on most of the work herself towards the last few weeks in order to really nail down the look she personally wanted, which I felt was abit unfair on her. Give me as much work for me as you want over the holidays Anja, we don't want you to kill yourself with work hehe :D

I'm not too sure what was going on with 'Glitch' though. My role in the group is to help with the Animation and any other areas in need of digital or artistic man power, so to speak. But this term not much was asked of me, in fact I ended up not having to do any work on the project other than some general helping with ideas. I did have a section of storyboarding to do, but some confusion on who was doing what happened when Natasha respectfully had to drop working for the film in order to manage other work as recomended by Mike Smith, so at some point I ended up not having to do the storboards????......... But in any matter, I think the group now has Raul working on it too now, which is great if that's the case as there was only Alex and Prince with me and Tash only helping out. Plus Alex seems to be taking more control with directing the film's production, which is another positive note because it had nobody directing it (Kanika Andrews created the idea/pitch of the film but decided she didn't want to work on it at the beggining, allowing Prince and Alex to take it on).

So with that note, its time for a holiday rest...... though probably won't get much of a rest with so much work that needs to be done. More refined concepts for Junk Food, Maya tests, blockouts, initial production on films, and not to mention dissertation research............. OMG Im getting tired just thinking about it all............... ok........... gona take the weekend off now.......... I'll be back with more posts soon, and hopefully with better work than Iv posted so far hehe......................

Junk Yard Blockout Madness!!!!...........

Iv been working on a 3D blockout of how the Junk Yard could look for the film Junk Yard using Maya. I wanted to create a general visualisation and test out some lighting etc.
BUT.........
Because I litterally used lots n' LOTS of block for the blockout of junk mounds, my pc naturally couldn't handle it when it came to rendering, my proccessor even made sounds I had never heard ANY proccessor or even PC do in my life lol. I only managed to be able to get 'Maya Software' renders of just the mounds of scrap and surrounding walls because every time I tried to do a any sort of render using Mental Ray the software would just shut down, and totally destroy my pc's memory usage. In fact, I actually had a different blockout to the one I have now but I hadn't saved it when I 1st attempted Mental Ray render (Such a AMATURE mistake!!), and as you can guess Maya just died on me.

So heres a few renders of the second blockout. As I mentioned, I couldn't test out some nice lighting, so lpease mind the crapness :P.............. also left out a few extra things on the second attempt such as cranes, etc..............

Peri Bacalari

Was looking at some of the environmental ideas I have drawn out so far, and some of them reminded me of the Peri Bacalari......... I have no idea what they are called in English context, if they even do have an English naming hehe, but the name translates to 'Fairy Chimneys'..........

They are basically pillar like natural rock structures within Turkey, where in some of them people have made homes out of years ago. I was visualising how the human population of the junk planet would have homes in the wasteland, and then these 'Fairy Chimneys' suddenly popped into my head.

Some more environment concepts, focussing on the wasteland. The third concept I had on my previous post, the pen drawn one, our director Chris particularly liked and asked me to push that through with the style. I wasn't particularly too experienced or comfortable using pen to draw prior, but heres what Iv managed to come up with.................

Chris has finally finished off the script and and asked us if we wanted anything changed, obviously no one did because it was perfect :p. So now we have started to storyboard, and seeing as I havn't been as productive with the concepting as everyone else I decided to take up quite a hefty chunk of the script to do.

Below are the thumbnails of the 'DAY 2' section of the script.... I still need to do about one more page worth of thumbnails, but this is what I have so far.................

Chris is very close to finalising the script for Junk Food now so we should be able to start dishing out some storyboards very soon. But in the mean time we are trying to get some concepts and research done at least. Loui seems to have the character design for the girl in the story covered and chris has alot of sketched ideas for th Junk Robot design, so me and Tash are doing some environmental concepts, although Chris again already has quite a few ideas concepted out :P.

Ok so these are the backgrounds I have made for Anja. She asked me to create the backgrounds of five specific storyboard panels, each one having to be composed of different cut out images and to look like everything was lightly drawn/painted on scrunched up rice paper. To do this I had to use lots of different layers in Photoshop, with a seperate layers for for both the rice paper and scrunched texture aswell.........

Anja has asked everyone working for her to do someresearch for her film '1000 Cranes for Peace' so that we can make both mood boards and backgrounds for the pre production part of the film. I was appointed with finding refference on the four seasons and types of paper (Japanese), and also to produce some backgrounds for the 'Run' part of the animation.

At the moment we don't have a script to work from for 'Junk Food', we all knew there wasn't a finalised story for the project when signing up to work on it, but the background story to the Junk Food universe I think is VERY solid and quite a number of smaller stories can easily be generated.

Sooo right now we are going throught the process of actually coming up with a story and devising a script to sart working from, but its not easy. The guy who came in from Aardman recomended that the story should be based around an Iron Giant type theme or plotline, so we have some ideas flowing.

Chris is working really hard on this script with everyone pitching in lots of ideas, lets hope we can help Chris get it done in time.

Ok sooooo once again Iv created a blog abit late into production :P, but the FINAL YEAR has BEGAN!!!! and its time for work work work!!!!!!!!

My animation film pitch didn't get chosen (not surprised) so Iv found myself 3 other films to work on. The film Iv chosen to work on as my main group for the year is Chris Harrison's, with his film 'Junk Food'. The other two films Ill be working on part-time are Anja's film '1000 Cranes for Peace', and Kanika's film 'Glitch' which she has chosen to not direct and given to Prince and Alex to manage.
